Dresdner Robin provided landscape architectural
design and engineering services for the construction of an
open space area located at the corner of Sip Ave. and Newkirk
Street, in front of the Culinary Arts Institute/Conference
Center in Jersey City.
The project consists of streetscape improvements,
public plaza and multi-functional student garden area. The
plaza is designed as the gateway to the Culinary Institute.
It is open and framed by ornamental trees. Its decorative
pavement extends onto the street and to the building entry.
A bronze medallion, granite bands, pavers and solar lights
set a grand approach into the college building. The student
garden has controlled access and it’s open to the public
during the day. It provides students with outdoor work space,
areas for quiet congregation and discussions. The amphitheater
seating allows for small performances and outdoor teaching.
The space can accommodate additional seating for functions
of up to 200 people. Gates on the side of the park open to
connect to Newkirk St. with the intention to close the street
occasionally and use it as part of the open space for special
events organized by Hudson County Community College.
The focal point of the garden is the Stuyvesant Statue set
between two identical granite water walls at the top of the
amphitheater. Specially selected landscaping and lighting
create human scale spaces, emphasize the design elements,
and highlight the pavement themes. |
