Berry Lane Park- Project Overview

When constructed Berry Lane Park will be one of the largest City owned parks at approximately 13 _ acres and the first new park to be constructed in Jersey City in quite some time. The park is a result of the vision of the City’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the Morris Canal Redevelopment Plan and will be a project of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency. The park is located in the Morris Canal Redevelopment Area bound by Communipaw Avenue to the north, Garfield Avenue to the West, the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to the south, and Woodward Street to the east. The site formerly housed industrial/rail operations as well as the historic Morris Canal. Both of which have long been abandoned. The site is in a current state of disrepair and underutilization but will make an excellent site for a well needed Park for the citizens of Jersey City.

The transformation of the former Industrial/rail site into a vibrant new park for the community will provide for an interesting challenge. We have assembled a team of consultants who specialize in urban redevelopment, sustainable design, open space and park planning projects. Our goal is to create a park that embraces the local community and offers people of all ages and abilities visual and recreational opportunity. In pursuing this assignment, we will seek to:

  •  Engage the community, identify recreational, passive, intellectual and spiritual needs;
  •  Evaluate the Site, identify physical opportunities and constraints;
  •  Develop a fiscal understanding of the likely environmental challenges;
  •  Investigate cutting edge technologies materials and sustainable design;
  •  Produce a design plan that is environmentally sound, cost effective, and low-maintenance.

The development of Berry Lane Park will be broken down into 8 Phases from preliminary design through construction. The 8 phases are listed below; the time frames for each phase are shown under the Project Schedule.

1. Project Commencement
2. Schematic design
3. Design Development
4. Construction Drawings
5. Bidding and Contract Award Phase
6. Construction Administration Phase
7. Project Closeout Phase
8. Post Occupancy Review Phase

Community Involvement is paramount in the success of the park programming so multiple community workshops will be held to garner the input of the residents. We encourage you to be a voice and participate in the Community Workshops or provide us your Feedback.
